Chapel of St. Cross called Pustyňa

About the brother Antonin - Joseph Czimmerer (sometimes written as Zimmerer), son of the former mayor of Bohumin Elias Czimmerera – the owner of the burgess house No. 9, and about the brother Felix - Antonin Brosky, former councilor of Bohumin,  is known with certainty only that sometime in May 1756, they were accepted to the III. Order of St. Francis of Assisi.

Both so-called laymen, who since the day of their famous monastic vows also received the right to wear religious clothing, relatively soon decided on a hermit way of life. By their mutual applications from 1st July, 1756, addressed to the Queen's office located in Opava, ask the competent authorities for approval to allow construction of a small hermitage somewhere on the territory of Bohumín. A positive opinion was issued on 29th July, 1756 but their request was conditioned by the fact that the hermitage would be set up near the existing chapel dedicated to St. Cross that was dated perhaps to 1733. Construction was financially guaranteed by their remaining wealth.

Their hermitage near the chapel of St. Cross, which both of hermits took care of, unfortunately didn’t take a long time. In 1782, the Order III. of St. Francis of Assisi was dissolved by the imperial decree and hermitages, including this one in Bohumin, were cancelled.

According to preserved fragment records, the history of this hermitage building in Bohumin was finally closed down in the second half of the 19th century, when it was left to its fate and disappeared spontaneously.

Chapel of St. Cross, which was often not only in oral tradition confused with the original hermitage, was still maintained by the citizens of Bohumin, especially due to piety for just these two hermits, who lived near by. Since 1964, it has been registered in a central register of cultural monuments. In the history of its existence, the chapel has been repaired several times, and some little changes in its look applied. The worst it was probably after a bombing of the town at the end of the World War II, when only the outer walls were left. Documented post-war reconstruction took place in 1969, when the local agricultural cooperative ensured by the use of steel ropes the cracking walls. Replacement of the roof was initiated by the local Municipal Committee in 1973 and 1981.

Currently it is impossible to visit the chapel due to lack of accessible roads because it’s located in the middle of a field. Its interior is empty nowadays. The original plastic wooden scene of the crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth on the Mount Calvary, was already missing in the chapel before the year 1971. The building statement is also deteriorating. Its last partial reconstruction took place in 1995 only because the fact that in 1994 there was a spontaneous collapse of its unusually shaped gable, originally completed by a cast-iron cross. During the "Cross Days", i.e. on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday before the Ascension Day celebration, or in the Memorial Day or St. Mark (25th April), imploring processions for the maintenance of planted crops, particularly for the favorable weather, were held annually to the Chapel of the Holy Cross until the death of a church administrator Joseph Sniegon – Pelikan from Bohumin. At the head of the procession after the Holy Mass, the local administrator with ministrants, mayor of the city with other councilors, firefighters and members of the other corporations and associations were walking from the parish church to a new cemetery, singing hymns and litanies of, while local young men and maidens and other citizens were carrying banners.
